Youth Leadership - YEL

Program Description:  Youth Engaged in Leadership (YEL) is a nine (9) month experience- based leadership development program designed specifically to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and straight youth ages 14 – 20 during the entire program.  

A structured program encompassing both leadership education and practical experience includes:

 

·         Teamwork and group leadership training

·         Public speaking coaching and presentation

·         Advocacy skill development and engagement

·         Community engagement and development

·         Community organizing

·         Project planning

 

Program Requirements:  The Youth Engaged in Leadership (YEL) program is open to eight (8) youth ages 14 – 20 who self-identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or straight.  Eligible youth will be asked to submit an application with at least one letter of recommendation and a statement of support from a parent/guardian (for youth below the age of 18).Youth who will turn 21 during the program timeframe are ineligible. Interviews may be scheduled throughout July 2010 depending on the number of qualified applicants for the eight available spaces. 

            Youth selected for YEL will be expected to participate in an orientation day on August 7, 2010 from 12:00 – 5:00PM at ROSMY (2311 Westwood Ave, Richmond, VA 23230).

YEL youth will be expected to attend weekly YEL meetings (Monday evenings 6:30 – 8:00PM – first meeting will be held September 13, 2010) at ROSMY unless otherwise stated for a specific activity. In addition to the weekly meeting requirements, all participants will be expected to participate in and or coordinate:

 

·         2 Community-based events

·         2 LGBT specific events

·         1 Community-based presentations

·         Serve as youth delegates for ROSMY at organizational functions

 

Program Fees: The Youth Engaged in Leadership program is a fully funded program of ROSMY, thanks to support from local businesses and individual donors.

 

**The only fees to participants will be for extra-curricular activities or personal needs that that may result from youth engagement but are outside scheduled meeting or activity times**
