YEL Program Description: Youth Engaged in Leadership (YEL) is a nine (9) month experience- based leadership development program designed specifically to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and straight youth ages 14 – 20.
A structured program encompassing both leadership education and practical experience includes:
* 4 Day residential leadership conference focused on building awareness to issues of prejudice and strategies for creating social change.
* Representation and participation on the ROSMY Board of Directors as the youth voice in organizational decision making.
* Teamwork and group leadership training * Public speaking coaching and presentation * Advocacy skill development and engagement
* Community engagement and development
* Community organizing Program Requirements: The Youth Engaged in Leadership (YEL) program is open to nine (9) youth ages 14 – 20 who self-identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or a straight ally. Eligible youth will be asked to submit an application with at least one letter of recommendation and a statement of support from a parent/guardian (for youth below the age of 18). Youth will be expected to attend weekly YEL meetings (Monday evenings 6:30 – 8:00PM) at ROSMY (2311 Westwood Ave., Richmond, VA 23230) unless otherwise stated for a specific activity.
In addition to the weekly meeting requirements, all participants will be expected to participate in and or coordinate:
* 4 Community-based Events
* 4 LGBT specific events
* 2 Community-based presentations
* Serve as youth delegates for ROSMY at organizational functions
Program Fees: The Youth Engaged in Leadership program is a fully funded program of ROSMY, thanks to support from Capital One LGBT Network, The Gay Community Foundation and The Youth Philanthropy Project of The Community Foundation Serving Central Virginia.
**The only fees to participants will be for extra-curricular activities or personal needs that that may result from youth engagement but are outside scheduled meeting or activity times**
